Motivation Matters

Do you ever feel like your motivation is at rock bottom? Well you are not alone. Apparently nearly 70% of people say they feel less creative during the winter months, and 50% have reduced energy levels. It makes sense to me. When it’s cold and dark outside I just want to curl up on the sofa with a blanket and a good book! However something shifted in me with the arrival of the new year. I wanted change, I was bored with my status quo.

So I started reading up about motivation in general. There are two types of motivation – push and pull.

The first pushes you away from something, and the second draws you to something in a most compelling way. As I was feeling a strong desire for change I believed I was experiencing extreme push motivation. My quest for change was motivating me to do something about it. However the more I read, the more I realised that I was being pulled too. I have a deep desire to achieve something new. Now my eldest son is at school full time and my youngest son loves his pre-school so much, he wants to go as often as he can, I am now looking to me and what I want to achieve.

The beauty is that pull motivation is generally more powerful as it is not ruled by time. It can be long term goals that you wish to set that are inspiring you. The disadvantage of push motivation is that once the thing that is pushing you is removed, your motivation can dwindle.

Sometimes we can lose our motivation when a task seems so far from completion. We become so focused on the end result and fail to take any enjoyment from the actual task at hand. I was recently reminded that there is nothing wrong with doing a little bit of something each day towards your future goal, you will get there in the end. Remember the old adage that ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’. It takes time to create great things.

What do I want to achieve in 2018?

This year I want to concentrate on three things for me:

1) I am looking to return to work and achieve the right work/life balance for my family

2) I would like to complete more creative projects

3) I want to grow my blog further

I am publishing this article on the centenary of women gaining the right to vote. Sadly we still have a long way to go for true equality and I am passionate about keeping the conversation going with a focus on female empowerment no wellbeing.

So now we are a month in to 2018, what are your motivations and what do you want to achieve this year? Please comment below, you may inspire someone else to achieve something great.
