A friend and colleague of mine Aimee Leigh is a firm believer in the power of essential oils. She believes they can affect us spiritually, and can help to manage our emotions and help decrease our toxic load. They can help to limit any negative core beliefs we may hold about ourselves and they can help to unravel and release emotional scars. They can also be used as sleep aids, as nutritional supplements and in cleaning products.
Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds extracted from seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants and contain natural and unique properties that can benefit your health and overall wellness. Aimee asked me if I would be interested in trying a few essential oils specific to my ailments, and write about my experience.
I wanted to try some essential oils that could help balance my tiredness and my hormones so she sent me four oils: Console Blend, Wild Orange, Peppermint and Lavender. Their properties and benefits are listed below courtesy of Enlighten. Emotions & Essential Oils, 6th Edition: A Reference Guide for Emotional Healing.
This is a comforting blend. This blend of trees and flowers was formulated to assist individuals who are in need of emotional comfort. It soothes emotional pain after periods of extreme stress or trauma. When a storm is raging in one’s heart or mind, or when there is no relief from fear, emotional pain, or anxious feelings, Console Blend can assist individuals in taking the first steps toward healing. It encourages individuals to seek divine intervention so they may experience the ever-present mantle of warmth, love, and consolation. Console Blend helps ease one’s burdens, assists in experiencing a serene heart and mind, and guides individuals toward emotional rest. The ingredients within this blend include Frankincense, Patchouli, Ylang Ylang, Labdanum, Amyris, and Sandalwood.
Wild Orange addresses a wide variety of emotional issues. It inspires abundance, fosters creativity, and supports a positive mood. Wild Orange also reconnects individuals with their inner child and brings spontaneity, fun, joy, and playfulness into one’s life. At its core, Wild Orange teaches the true meaning of abundance. It encourages individuals to let go of scarcity mindsets with all of their manifestations, including fear, nervousness, inflexibility, workaholism, lack of humour, and the belief that there is not enough. Wild Orange reminds the soul of the limitless supply found in nature. Fruit trees, like the orange tree, give freely to all in need. This oil teaches individuals to give without thought of compensation. In nature, there is always enough to go around. Wild Orange encourages individuals to let go of their need to hoard, which is the epitome of scarcity.
Wild Orange also assists an individual’s natural creative sense. It inspires limitless solutions for problems and issues. One never needs to fear. Wild Orange invites individuals to completely let go as a child does and to live from their True Self. At a person’s core, they are abundance. Sharing, playing, relaxing, and enjoying the bounties of life – these are the gifts bestowed by Wild Orange oil. Physically, Wild Orange is incredibly uplifting and energising. It lifts your spirits instantly. Put one drop in your water and feel refreshed. Or rub through your hands for aromatic bliss. You can even use it to bake or put in your morning muesli like Aimee.
Peppermint brings joy and buoyancy to the heart and soul. It invigorates body, mind, and spirit, and reminds individuals that life can be happy, and they don’t have to be controlled by fear. It lifts an individual out of their emotional trials for a short reprieve. When individuals use Peppermint, they feel as though they are gliding through life. It assists in staying on the surface of emotional issues like floating on top of water. The power of Peppermint can be felt most in times of discouragement or despair. When individuals are disheartened, they may use Peppermint to rediscover the joy of being alive. However, a person may also abuse the properties of Peppermint oil. If it is used as a permanent escape to avoid dealing with emotional pain, it can hinder growth and progress. Peppermint should not be used in this way. It aids individuals who need a short breather. At times, a reprieve is necessary before reentering emotional waters, but one is not meant to wade in the shallow end forever. When it is accepted and embraced, emotional pain serves as a teacher. Peppermint can assist individuals in regaining the strength needed to face their emotional reality.
Physically, peppermint is super energising. The scent stimulates the hippocampus area of the brain which controls mental clarity and memory. The odour triggers you to wake up and pay attention. Rub a couple of drops through your hands and feel the buzz! It is an instant energy boost. Also you can put a drop in your water or diffuse. Drinking it is very, very refreshing.
Lavender aids verbal expression and calms the mind. Specifically, it calms the insecurities that are felt when one risks their true thoughts and feelings. Lavender addresses a deep fear of being seen and heard. Individuals in need of Lavender hide within, blocking their true self-expression. While they may be going through the motions of outward expression, they are actually holding back their innermost thoughts and feelings. The expression is not connected to the heart or soul. Lavender supports individuals in releasing the tension and constriction that stems from withheld expression. This bottleneck in communication can result in worried and racing thoughts, anxiousness, and sleep disruption. Due to past experiences, they may feel unsafe or fearful of expressing themselves because of potential rejection. Often they do not allow themselves space to get in touch with all they truly think and feel. Their true voice is therefore trapped within and goes unexpressed. Strong feelings of being unlovable, unimportant, or unheard can accompany this condition.
Lavender encourages emotional honesty and insists that one speak their innermost thoughts and desires. As individuals learn to communicate their deepest thoughts and feelings, they are liberated from their self-inflicted prison. It is through open and honest communication that an individual has the potential to experience unconditional love, acceptance, and peace of mind. Through Lavender’s courageous spirit, one is free to share their True Self with others.
Aimee advised me to trial the essential oils for a week and write a mood diary to document the effect they were having on me.
The first day I used all four of the oils both aromatically and topically by inhaling them and rubbing a few drops into my hands. That first night I slept so much better and didn’t wake at all in the night, which is something I tend to do quite often. I am certain this was due to the Lavender which helps to provide a restful night’s sleep. It can also help reduce the appearance of blemishes, so I tried that too!
On the second day I noticed I had more energy. I sometimes get a rather unsettled stomach depending on my stress and tiredness levels and I was delighted to find that my stomach seemed a lot more settled. This is likely to be a side effect of the Peppermint oil, which can alleviate occasional stomach upset. I also took to inhaling the peppermint oil to relieve some of the tension I feel when my two young sons are squabbling with each other. I tend to carry my stress in my neck and shoulders and so I rubbed some of the peppermint oil into that part of my body, which gave me a soothing sensation and helped to relieve some of my tension.
I informed Aimee that I am currently struggling to find my right career path. Aimee suggested I rub some of the Wild Orange oil on the side of my head by my right frontal lobe to boost my creativity, and to journal for thirty minutes seeing what thoughts and expressions arrive on the page. Sadly this didn’t work for me as I had hoped, so I need to give this another go. I wasn’t able to keep going for a full half hour and I didn’t get the clarity I was searching for.
Women can often struggle through the monthly hormonal cycle and the emotions that come with it, so to help balance hormones, Aimee suggested I use the Console Blend as this is a very comforting oil and can promote emotional healing.
I am super impressed by the health benefits that these essential oils provided over such a short space of time. Aimee stressed to me that it is very important not to misuse the oils as they are very potent and therefore it is vital that you use the best quality oils you can find. Also if you are pregnant, please check with your doctor before you use any oils. Check out Aimee’s website for more information on the doTerra essential oils that I have been using.
Are you willing to give essential oils a go? I would love to hear your experience of using them and any benefits they gave you.
